This spring, Team Malizia celebrates 10 years of racing, adventure and team spirit. A decade defined by bold choices, purpose and the ambition to do things differently. To mark the occasion and as we soon open a new chapter with a new boat, the team is releasing “Unconventional - A sailing team challenging the norm”, a documentary retracing the story, vision and spirit that shaped Team Malizia into one of offshore racing’s most distinctive teams.

Team Malizia is proud to unveil its crew for The Ocean Race Atlantic, a new transatlantic race for the IMOCA class, starting on 1 September 2026. Skipper Boris Herrmann (GER) will be joined by co-skippers Cole Brauer (USA), Justine Mettraux (SUI), Julien Villion (FRA), and onboard reporter Gauthier Lebec (FRA). The race from New York City to Lorient will mark the team’s first competition aboard its new IMOCA yacht and reflects its long-term vision of building a strong and diverse sailing squad for The Ocean Race next year.

After setting sail on the 7th of January 2026, the crew onboard the Malizia Explorer research vessel headed south, the bow of the vessel pointed toward the Western Antarctic Peninsula. While some team members were still tucked away below deck, recovering from their first days of finding their sea legs, Dr. Lea Olivier from the Alfred Wegener Institute was keeping a close watch on the horizon. She was looking for fog, which often accompanies the “Antarctic Convergence” and signals the transition into polar  waters.

Have you ever been to the Antarctic? Well, around 120 pupils from a school in Kiel just had the chance to virtually come onboard the Malizia Explorer for an hour, as the team of scientists, sailors, and photographers answered their most burning questions while sailing through Antarctic waters on their way to the Danger Islands for a scientific research mission.

Malizia Explorers’ first scientific sailing expedition in Antarctica has begun its return to Ushuaia after a decisive call to halt further attempts to reach the Danger Islands. Following one successful landing on Brash Island, which is the westernmost island within the archipelago, the team determined that worsening ice conditions and an unfavourable weather forecast made any additional passage unfeasible. The team are set to arrive by Sunday the 7th of December with a wealth of knowledge and data collected during this first detailed study of the Danger Islands archipelago.

A team happy to have made it back safely. 

For months, our team had been preparing for the moment the Malizia Explorer would make landfall on the Danger Islands, which are seven small islands spanning just 5 km² off the Antarctic Peninsula. It’s a place recently designated as an Antarctic Specially Protected Area (ASPA 180), and, following Germany’s commitment to protect it, a team of scientists and the Malizia Explorer crew set sail towards these untouched islands. On the 19th of November 2025, the crew of 14, composed of scientists, media representatives, sailors, and a cook, made their way to the end of the world on the 26-metre sailing vessel to study penguins and seven small yet ecologically valuable islands. Their dual mission: gathering data on this newly protected area on land, and collecting evidence that may support the expansion of the protected zone into the marine environment if necessary.

The Malizia Explorer science vessel has set sail for the Danger Islands on its first mission to Antarctica. Together with researchers from the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), the Thuringian Institute of Sustainability and Climate Protection (ThINK), and the German Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt), Boris Herrmann and the team onboard Malizia Explorer are carrying out a joint scientific survey of this remote archipelago. Their goal is to deliver the first detailed study of the region and turn it into a pilot project that translates scientific evidence into political action, potentially creating a blueprint for accelerating Ocean protection in the future.

Team Malizia celebrates a remarkable result from two familiar faces: Francesca Clapcich and Will Harris, who raced together as part of our Malizia crew this summer, have taken second place in the IMOCA Class of the Transat Café L’OR. Competing onboard 11th Hour Racing, our former Malizia - Seaexplorer, this was Francesca’s first race as skipper of her own IMOCA campaign, marking a significant milestone in her journey, and Will’s third participation in the event. Carrying forward the spirit of teamwork, determination, and purpose, the duo delivered an outstanding performance and secured one of the best non-French results in recent IMOCA history.

This Sunday 26 October, Team Malizia’s long-time co-skipper Will Harris set sail on his third Transat Café L’OR (formerly the Transat Jacques Vabre), racing from Le Havre, France, to Martinique. This time, he is racing alongside skipper Francesca Clapcich on a boat he knows by heart: our former Malizia - Seaexplorer, now handed over to Francesca’s team and rebranded as 11th Hour Racing. It’s Francesca’s first participation in the race, and her debut as skipper of her own IMOCA campaign. Together, the pair have kicked off the Transat Café L’OR 2025 with a powerful performance .After a stormy first night in the English Channel, they are holding strong in the leading group of the IMOCA fleet. After a tight battle for the podium on the fifth and final stage of The Ocean Race Europe 2025, Team Malizia crossed the finish line in Boka Bay, Montenegro, last night to claim third place and five points. Having departed from Genova, Italy, just over seven days ago, the crew navigated a demanding Mediterranean course of coastlines and capes, testing new watch systems and strategies while remaining firmly in the leading pack until the very end. With one Final Coastal Race remaining, fourth place overall is still within reach, leaving Team Malizia determined to fight to the very last mile.

“Not the result we wanted, but more determined than ever” - Team Malizia has crossed the finish line of Leg 4 of The Ocean Race Europe 2025 in sixth place after an intense Mediterranean race from Nice, France, to Genova, Italy. Boris Herrmann’s Team Malizia completed Leg 3 of The Ocean Race Europe on Friday morning, finishing in fifth place after a 650-nautical-mile sprint from Cartagena, Spain, to Nice, France. The team faced shifting winds, sweltering heat, and intense tactical duels with their rivals, arriving two and a half hours behind leg winner Biotherm. They are now focusing on recovering during a short stopover before the Leg 4 start to Genova.
