 and its 2,5-lap inshore race course started well for 

, with close inshore racing and the team coming out on top for that short course. 

Two of the other teams, Biotherm and 11th Hour Racing, had 

 at the start of the race which meant the former had to return to port to fix the issues resuming racing late in the night. The latter had issues with their main sail which the team decided to fix in the calm flat waters in the wind shadow on Table Mountain.

Both teams have managed to catch up relatively well due to the 

, so all 5 boats are within 130nm of each, with Holcim currently leading the pack at the time of writing.

 for the teams with lighter than expected winds and also an 

adverse current running against the fleet 

which left some of them moving backwards and fighting to catch the wind and a way to move forward. 

 is moving through to the South of the fleet with the boats taking the middle option gybing back and forewords over the top of the system. Those willing to take the bigger risks are heading further south and having to manage the largest of the rolling waves. However, all the teams seem to be 

keeping a sensible distance from the storm and avoiding the +6 meter waves

It’s safe to say that the sailors are already experiencing 

with big rolling seas, stronger winds and cooler temperatures.

What’s With The Weather And Why This Routing   

During the days before each race leg, the team works with 

 to prepare the weather and course before the leg (no assistance can be given during the leg). Team Malizia's 

main navigator for this leg is Nico Lunven

and will be relishing the chance to put the boat to the test through the Southern Ocean. 

 there wasn’t a definite clear routing option

. There were three choices to take before the start: a high route, a medium route or a low route, each bearing different pros and cons. The low route would currently see the team in the worst of the storm and would be a very high risk this early on in a long race and so has been ruled out by teams and so all have gone for the 

One surprise that the team had during the first day involved the currents that circulate off the coast of Cape Town, when operating normally these would have pushed us forward and aided the team in the light wind area but at this time they were reversed and so

 which slowed us down. Slightly further to the East, Team Holcim-PRB and GUYOT Environnement - Team Europe didn’t seem to have as strong a current and so kept a steady pace. 

Team Malizia's navigator Nico Lunven has managed to guide the team on two longer gybes staying in the 

 commented: “We are finding our rhythm on board, we were lucky to have a lighter wind day to get going at the start and now we are finding our way on board together.”

Another step forward for the team on board has been the
