Malizia - Seaexplorer arriving in second place in Newport, RI, USA

, arriving at 19:13:22 UTC (3:13 pm local time) this Wednesday 10 May 2023. The team, 

17 days 02 hours 58 minutes and 22 seconds

 at sea in this gruelling 5,500 nautical miles long race from Itajaí, Brazil, to Newport, Rhode Island, USA.

 pushed hard until the end and managed to keep a close gap, finishing 

 with 11th Hour Racing and is now only one point behind Team Holcim-PRB who had previously held a big lead over the other teams. 

 commented: “What an amazing leg it has been, such a close fight, and finally finishing 30 minutes or so behind 11th Hour Racing Team! I’m so proud of our team, they have sailed an amazing leg and done a fantastic job. To be here in second place, to prove that we can be really fast in these lighter wind conditions is an amazing feeling. Now, we are really in for the fight in the overall ranking.”

. The same can’t be said for some of the other boats in the IMOCA fleet. Team Holcim-PRB abandoned the race early on when they lost their mast off the coast of Brazil. Then, two days before the finish of Leg 4, Guyot Environnement - Team Europe also dismasted when they sailed in the biggest storm to hit the fleet so far. Luckily, no one was hurt in either incident and Team Malizia hopes to have a full fleet back in the race soon!

It wasn’t the easiest: We saw two boats lose their mast in this leg which was really sad and disappointing for them, but also made me a bit nervous as the one responsible for the boat and the crew. It definitely put a bit of stress on my shoulders. But we made it through the storm, managed to keep the boat in one piece, and brought her to the finish line with almost no problems at all. I really loved the challenge and I’m looking forward to the other legs of this marathon race!”

 added: “Will has done an amazing job as skipper, he is young but incredibly experienced and talented. I had no worries about leaving the boat in his hands and he is accompanied by a diverse and strong team - they have put in an amazing performance until the very end, and I am extremely proud of them.”
