- Boris Herrmann was named the 39th Honorary Alster Lockkeeper this Monday at the Alsterpavillon in Hamburg, an honour that has been bestowed since 1981 on personalities who "open the locks" for the Hanseatic city in the broadest sense. The offshore sailor was honoured by the Congregation der Alster-Schleusenwärter for his  achievements in international races, such as the Vendée Globe and recently The Ocean Race 2022-2023, as well as for his commitment to environmental and ocean protection. 

With his team Malizia, Boris Herrmann sails around the world with one message: A Race We Must Win - Climate Action Now! On board his Malizia - Seaexplorer, race yacht, he has been collecting since 2018 valuable ocean data such as the sea surface CO2 levels, temperature and salinity. This rare data is very important for scientists it helps them to better understand the role of the Ocean in climate change. With his main partners, he is also working on innovative solutions to the climate crisis in each of their fields. Together with his wife Birte, he has developed the multilingual project "My Ocean Challenge" educational programme, which has reached over 70,000 students worldwide and in 12 languages since 2018, teaching them about the importance of the oceans for our climate.

Hamburg, 24. Juli 2023 - Im Alsterpavillon in Hamburg ist am Montag Boris Herrmann zum 39. Ehren-Alster-Schleusenwärter ernannt worden, eine Ehrung mit der 

seit 1981 Persönlichkeiten gekürt werden, die «im weitesten Sinne die «Schleusen» für die Hansestadt öffnen

. Der Hochseesegler wurde von der Congregation der Alster-Schleusenwärter 

für seine besonderen Leistungen bei internationalen Hochseeregatten, wie bei der Vendée Globe und neulich bei The Ocean Race 2022-2023, sowie für sein Engagement im Umwelt- und Meeresschutz ausgezeichnet. 

Mit seinem Team Malizia segelt er um die Welt mit einer Botschaft: A Race We Must Win - Climate Action Now! An Bord seiner Malizia - Seaexplorer misst er seit 2018 wertvolle Ozeandaten wie den CO2-Gehalt des Oberflächenwassers, Temperatur und Salinität. Diese seltenen Date sind für Wissenschaftler sehr wichtig, da sie damit die Rolle des Ozeans im Klimawandel besser untersuchen können. Mit seinen Partnern arbeitet er ebenfalls an innovativen Lösungen gegen die Klimakrise. 

Zusammen mit seiner Frau Birte hat er das mehrsprachige Projekt „My Ocean Challenge“ Bildungsprogramm entwickelt, das seit 2018 über 70,000 Schülerinnen und Schülern weltweit und in 12 Sprachen erreicht hat und ihnen die Bedeutung der Ozeane für unser Klima näher bringt.
