The non-profit organisation The Ocean and Us has partnered with the professional offshore sailing Team Malizia to rally support for a moratorium on deep-sea mining and secure the protection of the High Seas, our global commons.

Mangroves grow partially in the air, partially in the water, typically along coastlines in tropical and subtropical regions near the Equator

Mangrove forests are ecosystems with astonishing powers: They serve as nature’s coastal guardian and capture very large amounts of carbon dioxide. However, they are also under threat. By teaming up and creating the Malizia Mangrove Park, Team Malizia is actively working to turn the tide, protect mangrove forests, and positively impact climate change.

The German professional sailor Boris Herrmann has received the “Deutscher Meerespreis” (German Ocean Award) of the Prof. Dr Werner Petersen Foundation in recognition of his engagement as an ambassador for the Ocean and for communicating marine research topics to the general public. The prize was awarded today jointly with GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel under the patronage of Daniel Günther, Minister President of Schleswig-Holstein, at a ceremony with invited guests.

"Through our activities around science, education and partnership, Team Malizia wants to actively shape the UN Ocean Decade." 

Skipper Boris Herrmann has been announced as ambassador to the German Committee of the United Nations’ Decade of the Ocean, with the mission to anchor marine conservation and research more firmly in the public consciousness. Team Malizia’s Cornelius Eich becomes a new member of the committee for a duration of three years. Building on existing achievements in Ocean science  and outreach, Team Malizia is furthering its support towards the global effort to stimulate action at all levels and find solutions to create a healthy Ocean by 2030.

Shaping The Ocean We Need For The Future: Team Malizia’s Boris Herrmann Becomes Ambassador of the UN Ocean Decade in Germany

Will and Boris deploying a drifter float in the 2019 Transat Jacques Vabre. 

On day four of the Transat Jacques Vabre race on board Malizia - Seaexplorer, Boris Herrmann and Will Harris deployed a scientific instrument called a drifter buoy off the coast of Portugal at 37 degrees North. The device will live for around 700 days and autonomously sends data on atmospheric pressure, sea temperature and ocean currents to scientists on land. This data is crucial for the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and for climate scientists to better understand the future of the weather and the role the Ocean plays in climate change.

Academics and students from Davao Oriental State University are actively involved in the project, and the teams work with local communities along the coast, as their participation is crucial for the success and long-term sustainability of the restoration efforts.

Team Malizia, Zurich Germany, rrreefs, and the Mama Earth Foundation are launching a collaborative project to regenerate degraded mangroves and corals reefs in Pujada Bay, Philippines.
