From Antarctica to Northern Germany. 

Have you ever been to the Antarctic? Well, around 120 pupils from a school in Kiel just had the chance to virtually come onboard the Malizia Explorer for an hour, as the team of scientists, sailors, and photographers answered their most burning questions while sailing through Antarctic waters on their way to the Danger Islands for a scientific research mission.

For the first stop of The Ocean Race Europe, the Andrew Simpson Sailing Center in Portsmouth opened its doors to Team Malizia’s My Ocean Challenge and 60 local children. The young participants learned about the race, Team Malizia’s science mission and nature’s secret weapons against climate change, as well as got out on the water for fun watersports activities!

A rainy morning in Kiel was made a little brighter today as local children gathered to explore the wonders of the Ocean, learn what it means to be a sailor and discover how the sea shapes our lives and the world within it! Together with The Ocean Race Europe, Kiel Marketing, GEOMAR and ACO, Team Malizia’s My Ocean Challenge education programme welcomed kids for a day full of discovery: from hands-on activities to inspiring conversations with scientists and sailors!

More than 2100 children across Germany joined a live, interactive climate education event today, hosted by Team Malizia’s My Ocean Challenge, UNICEF Germany and the Deichtorhallen Hamburg. The hybrid event combined science, sailing, and art to explore the vital connection between climate change, Ocean health and children’s rights, and to inspire hope for a better, more sustainable future. Key speakers included offshore sailor Boris Herrmann, Ocean educator Birte Lorenzen-Herrmann, youth activist Sophia Ivanova and UNICEF Germany's executive director Christian Schneider as well as support from artist Lola Bott.

While Boris races at sea, we continue the race on land. Beyond sailing and collecting crucial Ocean data to help scientists better understand climate change, we are also deeply invested in Ocean and climate education through our Malizia My Ocean Challenge program.

Racing for a Cause: Climate Action at Sea and on Land

Climate Action Now is not written on our sails for aesthetic reasons. There is a clear message here. 

Free for use: the posters created for students focus on environmental topics and can be borrowed for free and brought to schools for temporary exhibitions.

But as the old story goes, when Everybody assumes Somebody else will act, Nothing gets done. This is where the story of Max-Planck-Schule Kiel and their collaboration with schools in Mati, Philippines, offers a powerful lesson.

However, rising global temperatures are creating unexpected challenges for one of the most iconic monogamous birds: the majestic albatross.
