Team Malizia Passes The Infamous Cape Horn In First Place In The Ocean Race

Team Malizia crossed the Cape Horn waypoint in first place in Leg 3 of the Ocean Race at 16:23 UTC on 27th March 2023, marking the end of the Southern Ocean and a return to the Atlantic.

Rosalin Kuiper recovering after injury!

At around 9am UTC on 26th March Rosalin Kuiper suffered a head injury after she fell from her bunk when the boat turned and slammed unexpectedly in heavy sea conditions. Rosalin was off watch and sleeping when the boat wiped out due to a large wave off the South American coast near to Cape Horn. When this happened Rosalin was thrown from her bunk and hit her head just above her right eyebrow.

“We are really satisfied that it is working so far but we are holding back to not stress the material too much and keeping this distance or slowly extending it from Team Holcim-PRB but we also want to ensure we protect the boat. It is really a balance.”

The Building Storm as Malizia approaches Cape Horn

There is some excitement and tension in the air at the moment. The wind is picking up and so is the sea state, as the fleet is approaching increasing winds this afternoon. There is a strong depression centred almost 1000nm to their south which starts to move east and they have just started  feeling the effects of this weather system.

Team Malizia has crossed the halfway scoring gate in second place during Leg 3 of The Ocean Race at 23:44 UTC. The line which forms directly down from Cape Otway contains half of the points for the whole leg. For crossing in second place the team earnt a respectable 4 points. The fight is now on to reach the finishing line in Itajai Brazil.
